Did web search make GPT-5 a better diagnostician?

Not reliably. In a peer-reviewed benchmark of 161 image-based clinical cases, the strongest reasoning configuration reached 46.0% diagnostic accuracy. Adding web search cut the simplest configuration from 38.5% to 26.7%, while agent and deep-research modes also trailed that baseline.

People impact: Clinicians could receive a useful second perspective, but browsing may reinforce a wrong first guess and add verification work.

Can an AI agent safely change a clinical record?

A 43-task benchmark found that long-term memory helped a GPT-4.1-mini agent use FHIR tools, but the strongest held-out result was only 60.6% task success. This was a resettable test server—not a live hospital record system.

People impact: Clinicians could gain help with repetitive record actions, but a failed or misplaced write can create new work or affect later decisions.

Can AI identify leukaemia cells reliably across patients?

A hybrid image model correctly classified 1,583 of 1,599 held-out cell images, but the split was image-level rather than patient-disjoint. The 99% result is an internal benchmark, not evidence that the system works in a new clinic.

People impact: Laboratory staff could eventually use a validated model to prioritise images, but this study did not test work in a laboratory.

Can AI segment and grade lung tumours from CT images?

A combined segmentation and classification framework reported 94.78% accuracy on a 264-image held-out partition. The evidence comes from one processed repository dataset, with no independent hospital or prospective validation.

People impact: Radiologists could eventually gain contouring and triage support, but the study did not test clinical work.

Can chatbots match urologists on cancer decisions?

In 100 synthetic cancer cases, three leading chatbots were less often fully successful than two early-career urologists and made safety-critical errors far more often. Repeated answers also changed substantially.

People impact: Patients should not treat a consumer chatbot answer as an independent cancer diagnosis or treatment plan.

Can synthetic bodies improve burn-size estimates?

BurnAreaNet reduced error on 320,000 rendered views from 5,000 synthetic bodies, but its real-body check used only four scanned models and failed to beat the baseline on the highest-BMI body. It is not ready for burn triage.

People impact: First responders and clinicians could eventually gain a more consistent second estimate of burn extent where specialist support is limited.
